Dear Etobicoke-Lakeshore CPC Members and Friends –
Our Etobicoke-Lakeshore Conservative Association has had a busy few weeks since the last update in August and the Annual General Meeting on September 22, 2020.
Following the AGM, our former President Indira Bains announced her intention to step down from that role to seek the nomination to be our candidate in the next election. The board held an online meeting on October 8, 2020 and elected me, Geoff Turner, to succeed Indira as President. On behalf of our board and EL membership, I wish to extend our greatest appreciation to Indira for her hard work as our effective and well-organized President. We are privileged to have had Indira’s leadership.
Candidate Nomination Committee
Although the prospect of a fall election has now receded, our national CPC headquarters is prioritizing election preparedness, including the nomination of candidates in all ridings across the country, as quickly as possible. To that end, our riding is now “open” to applications from CPC members who wish to seek the nomination. We have accordingly formed our Candidate Nomination Committee and are preparing to run the nomination process as required by the newly-released CPC rules on the CPC website.
What’s Happening? Political Plug-In Event – October 27, 2020, 7pm
Most people want to be plugged-in and with that in mind our EL EDA is hosting an online event with Jim Burnett and John Capobianco on October 27. These two veteran Conservative insiders will discuss Erin O’Toole’s plans for a Conservative victory next election. It should be a fascinating and informative discussion, and we are lucky to have Jim and John here in EL to share their insights. If you missed the invitation email, you can still register here: EL Political Plug-In.
Political Op-ed by Denis Tsarev
In the continuing tradition of thought leadership contributed by EL conservatives, our board member and financial agent, Denis Tsarev, had another op-ed published in the National Post. His insightful article explores the dangers of populism, and focuses on less-frequently considered left-wing populism as demonstrated by our current Liberal government. Denis’ article is here: https://nationalpost.com/opinion/opinion-we-need-to-admit-canada-has-a-left-wing-populism-problem
GTA Policy Priorities
Under the able leadership of our policy chair Charles Donley, we finalized several policy motions focused on urban issues relevant to our GTA riding. This was motivated by the postponement of the national policy convention that was to have been held in November, and our desire to contribute several policy suggestions to party headquarters for consideration in the upcoming election platform.
There are two hotly contested GTA by-elections currently ongoing, in Toronto Centre and York Centre. The York Centre CPC candidate is Julius Tiangson and his campaign team has reached out to us seeking volunteers. If you would like to help Julius, you can sign up here: http://www.votejulius.ca/volunteer/
The Toronto Centre CPC candidate is Ryan Lester, his site is here: https://www.facebook.com/ElectRyanLester/
If anyone is interested in becoming more involved with our EDA, please reach out to us at firstname.lastname@example.org We would especially welcome volunteers with IT skills who could assist with our website, social media, and membership database management.
With a federal election coming soon, we need to prepare by growing our campaign war chest so our chosen candidate will have the best chance to win! And with year-end approaching, you may wish to consider benefiting from the extremely generous tax credits available for political donations. For a donation to our EDA up to $400, you get a 75% tax credit. So if you donate $400, you qualify for a $300 tax credit, meaning that the net cost to you is only $100. The annual maximum per individual is $1625. Any donation amount is welcome. Your tax receipt will be mailed to you in early 2021.
